The picture above is what we call jeepney . This is the most popular means of public transportation among the Filipino. Per my research they were originally made and inspired from US Military jeeps during the World War II. Since then they become a symbol of Philippine culture. Filipinos are known for their love of art thus most of this jeepneys are colourfully and beautifully decorated. You can see drawings, and paintings on the body of the jeep. In front are names - all come from the imaginative mind of a gifted hands behind the personality we call the artist. Various destinations are normally painted on the sides of the jeep and sometimes there is a signage in the mirror in front the driver. Each jeepney is a testament of artistic ability of the designer . It is specially constructed to be able to hold a heavy load. Normally this capacity of the passengers are 12 to 16 people. This passenger vehicle can take you anywhere. Passengers that board go anywhere. In Manila this jeep has certain routes. And they just go back and forth. Jeepney is considered as the public transport of an ordinary Filipino because of the cheapest and affordable fare. From the busy streets Philippines capital Manila down to the provinces of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao jeepney is really popular because they can do better. And because of its popularity the seats inside are filled with passengers and their belongings, seated face to face, knee to knee because of this, the personal space is minimized. Even if the jeep is full still most drivers and conductors accept new passengers again new addition to the crowd. But because the Filipinos are flexible and creative they will still get on board to the crowded jeep eager to start their journey going to their destination not minding if they would be hanging on the tail of the bumper, sits on roof of the jeep or infront of the jeep just like what you see in the picture above. This often times happen in the provinces and in the remote areas that due to lack of transportation and the schedule of the trip is once a day. Although the scenery is not good because sometimes you never know accident might happen still a lot of drivers (not all) tolerate it simply because they want to earn not thinking that by simply earning a little amount can risk the lives of this people. One interesting part of taking a jeep is, it serves as a mirror in a daily life of an ordinary people. By just standing at the side of the road waiting for a jeep and just one waive of this passenger’s hand is enough to catch a ride. If you are on top of the jeep all you need is get your one peso coin and knock the roof so the driver could hear and make a his way to stop the vehicle. Even if sometimes its scary because some drivers drives fast as if they are the king of the road still when you reach your destiny safely you can just utter thank you, Lord I made it and I had fun…..
